Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) is a statutory body created on May 1, 1972, by presidential Order No. 59 after bifurcation of the erstwhile Bangladesh Water and Power Development Authority. BPDB started its operation with an installed generation capacity of only 200 MW. BPDB also prepared a distribution expansion plan to keep pace with the growing demand. Generation of electricity from its own power plants. Power purchase from public & private generation companies as a single buyer. Bulk sales of electricity to utilities as a single buyer.

Transmission and distribution of BPDB
As part of reform and restructuring, transmission was vertically separated as a subsidiary of BPDB, and distribution was horizontally separated to create new distribution entities in the capital city (DPDC & DESCO) and rural areas (REB). Bangladesh's national grid covers the entire country and operates at 132 kV, 230 kV, and 400 kV. The country's transmission system is connected to the national grid of India through 400 kV lines at Bheramara and Comilla.
Ghorashal Power Station, BPDB, Norshingdi
Plant, located in Narsingdi, Bangladesh, is one of the country's largest power stations and plays a critical role in its electricity generation. Operated by the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), the plant primarily uses natural gas and liquefied natural gas to generate power, employing combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) technology to enhance efficiency and reduce emissions.
Total Capacity: As of my last update in January 2022, Ghorashal Power Station boasted a total installed capacity of approximately 950 megawatts (MW) across multiple units. However, power plant capacities are subject to change due to upgrades, expansions, or modifications over time. For the latest and most accurate information regarding Ghorashal Power Station's total capacity or any recent changes, it is advisable to consult official government energy departments, local utility companies, or recent industry reports.
Fuel Supply: Natural gas and oil, the primary fuels, are transported and stored at designated facilities.
Combustion in Boilers: The fuels undergo combustion in boilers, generating high-pressure steam through heating water.
Steam Turbines: High-pressure steam propels steam turbines connected to generators, converting mechanical energy into electrical energy.
Electricity Generation: Turbine-driven generators produce electricity through electromagnetic induction.
Tongi Gas Turbine Power Station, BPDB, Tongi
Capacity: 105 MW (Installed), 80 MW (Degraded/Net)
Commercial Operation Commencement: March 14, 2005
Planned Retirement: March 13, 2030
Efficiency and Output:
1. Although designed with a capacity of 105 MW, the current power production is 80 MW.
2. The power plant boasts an efficiency rating of 28.1%.

Central Equipment Repairing Shop (CERS) BPDB, Tongi, Gazipur
The Central Equipment Repairing Shop (CERS) plays a pivotal role in the maintenance and repair of critical electrical equipment, primarily focusing on transformers and electrical billing meters. Situated within the infrastructure of the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), CERS serves as a specialized facility dedicated to ensuring the reliability and functionality of essential components in the power sector.
CERS, as a specialized unit within the larger framework of BPDB, exemplifies the commitment to maintaining a robust and dependable power infrastructure. By combining technical expertise with advanced repair and diagnostic capabilities, CERS plays a vital role in sustaining the functionality of transformers and upholding the accuracy of electrical billing meters. In doing so, CERS contributes significantly to the overarching goal of the Bangladesh Power Development Board in providing a consistent and high-quality power supply to meet the nation's growing energy needs.
Kanchan Purbachal Power Generation Co., LTD
Kanchan Purbachal Power Generation Ltd. (KPPGL), located in Kanchan, Narayanganj, Bangladesh, is a 55 MW heavy fuel oil (HFO)-fired power plant. Operational since December 2021, it uses advanced MAN 18V48/60TS engines. As a part of X Index Energy Ltd., KPPGL contributes significantly to Bangladesh’s power infrastructure by supplying energy to the Rupganj region.
Introduction to HFO Power Plants: An HFO (heavy fuel oil) power plant is a facility designed to generate electricity by burning heavy fuel oil. Here are key points about these power plants: Fuel: Heavy Fuel Oil is a dense and viscous petroleum fuel derived from crude oil. It is commonly used in power plants due to its high energy density and availability. Power Generation Process: The fuel is burned in a combustion chamber, generating heat. This heat is used to convert water into steam, driving turbines connected to generators and producing electricity.
Shiddhirganj 210 M W Power Plant
The Siddhirganj 210 MW Power Plant, located in Narayanganj, Bangladesh, is a gas-fired thermal power plant operated by the Electricity Generation Company of Bangladesh (EGCB). Commissioned in 2010, it contributes significantly to the national grid. It uses natural gas as fuel and aims to improve Bangladesh's energy stability and efficiency.
Total Capacity: The plant has an installed capacity of 210 MW. It operates at high efficiency with a plant load factor (PLF) of about 83%, which reflects its reliable electricity production capabilities Fuel Supply: The plant is powered by natural gas, primarily supplied by Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited (TGTDCL). Boiler and Combustion: The power generation process involves gas turbines, which use the natural gas supply. Steam Turbines: The power plant utilizes steam turbines for electricity generation. Electricity Generation: The power generated is transformed and distributed at 132 kV voltage levels, ensuring efficient energy delivery
PGCB: National Load Dispatch Center (NLDC)
In the context of Bangladesh, the NLDC refers to the "National Load Dispatch Center," a vital component responsible for real-time monitoring, control, and management of the country's power system. It plays a crucial role in optimizing power generation, transmission, and distribution to meet the energy needs of the country efficiently.
Operated by the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB), it oversees electricity generation, transmission, and distribution. NLDC ensures grid stability, real-time demand-supply balancing, and optimal resource utilization to meet the nation's energy needs efficiently.
Manikganj 35 MW Spectra Solar Plant , Manikganj
The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) is a key organization responsible for managing power generation, distribution, and customer service in Bangladesh. Here are its main operations and focus areas:
Ownership: SEL owns 80% of SSPL and SIL owns the remaining 20%. Plant Type: Renewable energy power generation. Development: SSPL is a special purpose vehicle (SPV) that built, owns, and operates the plant. Location: The plant is located in Paturia, Shibalaya Upazila, Manikganj District, Bangladesh. Capacity: The plant has a gross capacity of 44 MW and a net capacity of 35 MW. Commercial operation: The plant began commercial operation on March 12, 2021. Financing: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) provided $15 million in financial support for the plant.
In conclusion, our visit to the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and several power plants has provided a comprehensive understanding of the country's power generation capabilities. BPDB plays a pivotal role in ensuring a reliable electricity supply, essential for the country's economic growth and industrialization. During our visit, we witnessed the diverse technologies used across different power plants, including thermal, gas, and renewable energy sources. The experience emphasized the importance of continuous modernization, efficiency improvements, and investment in sustainable energy solutions to meet the rising demand for electricity in Bangladesh.
